Longmont Podiatrist Reveals How High Heels Affect Your Feet

longmont co podiatrist for womenOur Longmont podiatrist says it’s no secret for women that wearing high heels can be uncomfortable. But women everywhere are willing to endure foot and ankle pain because they make you look taller, feet smaller, and figures appear slimmer. But there are numerous research and reports published that state that wearing high heels leads to altered muscle balance around the ankle, instability problems and pushes your center of gravity upwards and forward, altering your posture. You may try to compensate for this altered balance by bending forward at the hips and spine, and the calf, hips and back muscles become tense, leading to muscle fatigue and strain. Make no mistake about it, our Longmont podiatrist says wearing high heels is creates foot pain for women.

That doesn’t mean however, that you should give up heels altogether. But our podiatrist in Longmont, CO, recommends you take the following suggestions into consideration to lower the negative effects of wearing high heels.

  • Avoid wearing high heels for long periods of time, and be sure to have soft insoles to lessen the strain on your knees.
  • Choose wisely – select heels that are an inch and a half or maybe two inches at the most in height and with a slightly thicker heel to disperse your weight more evenly.
  • Wear the right size – so your toes won’t slide forward putting further undue pressure on your toes and select a wide toe dos rather than the pointy toe box.
  • Alternate your shoe choice day to day and throughout the day. Wearing athletic shoes for instance will allow your feet and body to stretch naturally.
  • And lastly, be sure to stretch your toes, feet, calves and hips. Try toe risers, standing with your toes on the edge of a step and your heels hanging over the edge.

Take care of your feet and they’ll take care of you. To meet with an experienced Longmont podiatrist, call us at 970.278.1440 or request an appointment at one of our convenient podiatry offices.
